Led by the children’s pretend play themes of fairytales and
magic, we embarked upon a creative arts journey of MAGIC.
Potions and spells that could turn you into a big dinosaur......or wet grass.......
Magic creatures that could fly, spit fire, shoot ice......
Magic wands that could be used to make animal magic.
With mothers’ day approaching, I wanted to work with the
children on something magical for their mothers. Hence, we began our Magic Creatures Project.
Our first step was utilizing the ingredients from our potion-making to create a magical background- the sky, the sea……. (Sizzlin’ and bubblin’ art!)
The next day, we manipulated our bodies to
create the pose of a magic creature:
Each of our poses was photographed and glued onto our
magical background.
We read ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ to see the creatures
within, and also looked at photographs of other magical, mystical creatures. We
created a think board with all the various kinds of facial/bodily features the
creatures might have.
Then we were ready to create ourselves into magic creatures.
Using loose parts, we added wings, tails, horns etc to our
photographs, creating ourselves into magic creatures.
Then we sent this message to our mothers:
Your Love makes me MAGIC!
We prepared a song to go along with our work from ideas the
children had while discussing why they loved their mothers. (Sung to the tune
of ‘Everything is Awesome’)
“Your love makes me magic.
When I fall down you will give me a hug.
Your love makes me magic.
And I will love you too.”
