2 March 2017: ARTIST HOUR

TL's charcoal drawing
In January this year, we discovered that our garden snail Little Sean seemed to have disappeared, leaving behind brown water inside the shell. This was the starting point for an inquiry into snails and what happened to Little Sean.
E observing our snails
After a long process of investigation, the children concluded that Little Sean might have gone to Snail Heaven.  They imagined and discussed what Snail Heaven might look like with water slides, swings, boats, wind, grass, beds with pillows and lots and lots of carrots.

Designing Snail Heaven
Inspired by artist Alfred Basha, we wanted to work on creating a Dream House for Little Sean in heaven.

Visual Artist Jackon Kang came into the atelier to help us out and showed the children his idea of Little Sean’s Dream House.

Jackson's Demo Drawing
Jackson did a demo drawing for the children and introduced them to fine line pens, brush pens and charcoal. He showed them the different qualities of lines that could be produced with these pens. The children then had a chance to explore with the pens he brought in.

The children were invited to use (familiar) sharpies and Jackson’s pens to create Little Sean’s Dream House.

O was so motivated to work on this piece after watching the demo

A few children in our group aspire to be artists when they ‘grow up’ and the opportunity to have a working artist in the atelier with us was very exciting for them. It was wonderful to watch the children at work. Everyone seemed to try hard and there was a sense of care taken while they were using Jackson’s pens. They explored the techniques demonstrated and experimented with new ways of doing.
